Where to live in Bilbao?

Bilbao is a medium size city located in the north of Spain. Besides not being as big as other Spanish cities, it’s always to know which neighbourhoods are better to live at. As always, it is going to depend on different factors, such as your budget, your university or your personal preferences. You also have to know that Bilbao is a very rainy city, so you may want to live near your university or at least close to a bus or metro station. In this post, we are going to explain you why you should live in each neighbourhood to help you finding the best student accommodation in Bilbao for you.

Casco Viejo

Casco Viejo, the Oldtown of our city, is one of the most special neighbourhoods of Bilbao. Also known as Las Siete Calles (The Seven Streets) due to the initial number of streets that conformed the city, is a multicultural place full of history, architectural attractions and good vibes.

The Oldtown is always a good place if you want to have a walk around the city. One of its most known corners is “Plaza Nueva”, the main square of the area. Under its arches, you can find different bars, shops and restaurants. In the evening, it’s also a good meeting point for friends before going on party.

The price of an student’s room in Casco Viejo can vary a lot depending on the street you choose, and of course, depending of the size of the flat. The average price of a room in Casco Viejo is around 350€ per month, not including the monthly bills. If you want to live in Casco Viejo, but you can not afford it, you can also find cheaper rooms in the nearby areas of Santutxu and Begoña.

Uribarri

Located behind the City Hall, the neighborhood of Uribarri is also a good option for Erasmus students coming to Bilbao. Renting a room in Uribarri is not that expensive comparing with other areas, and it’s really close from the city center. If you are going to study at Deusto University, living in Uribarri can be a good option for you, you could even get to the Campus by walk. If it’s not an option for you, Uribarri is also well communicated by and by metro, since the new metro line was recently opened.

Deusto

Deusto is one of the most popular neighborhoods for national and international students in Bilbao, due to its proximity to the private University of Deusto. Apart from that, Deusto is also well communicated by metro with the city centre and has good connections by bus with the Campus of Leioa.

Sarriko and San Ignacio

Living in Sarriko or in San Ignacio can be a good idea if you are going to study at the Economics Faculty of Sarriko. The preces in this area are also more affordable than in the city center. However, you need to know that besides being good connected by metro and bus, you will live far from the party area and also the center. The good point is that both are really quite areas where you will live without too much noise.

We hope that this article helped you deciding where to live in Bilbao :).
